Levski Sofia defender Jose Cordoba is undergoing a medical for the switch to Rangers after Norwich pulled out of their interest in the centre-half, but Rangers are aware the club and the Scottish Premiership isn’t his first choice.

As Ibrox Noise reported some days ago, the Championship side entered the race to sign him, and it was understood that was his first choice – both that club and especially the league.

But the Canaries backed off in the last 48 hours, turning their interest elsewhere, and the delay in getting the Rangers’ deal through was because Rangers had significant concerns in Cordoba’s interest in (outgoing manager?) David Wagner’s side.

With them out of the persuasion, Cordoba has accepted Rangers, despite the fact Rangers are a huge club, infinitely bigger than Norwich – it’s all down to the league.

The deal will be complete imminently, set to be announced the end of the week, subject to the usual work permit and clearance issues, the £3.2M fee confirmed as £2M up front and a further £1.2M in appearances and bonuses.

The lad is a very decent defender for sure, and it is slightly ludicrous that it’s taken till summer 2024 for Rangers to finally sign a younger stopper (22), with no centre-halves aside Leon Balogun brought in at all in recent windows.

It’s an area Rangers have been desperately weak in, and the lack of new talent in there, especially given the manager is a former defender himself, was a bit absurd.

But Cordoba is as good as sealed and signed on the dotted line and he will be Rangers’ second summer signing following on from Jefte.

Is this the level to bring 56 next season? Well, neither of these additions are ‘bad’ per se, and they’re probably a mite more inspiring than Sam Lammers, but time will tell on the pitch just how good the squad Philippe Clement is building actually is.
