Rangers captain James Tavernier has, unofficially, sort of, been named the world’s best right back, after club partner EA announced him in the world team of the year as part of their EA FC video game.
The franchise, formerly known as FIFA, offered the world the team of the year, presumably based on the video game, and Tavernier was named in said team, sort of.
Obviously Rangers leapt all over this naming him in the team of the season, but we did a bit of digging and Tavernier was named alongside Liam Scales and former Rangers link Crysencio Summerville who plays for Leeds in this team so we’re really not sure that it’s exactly the most marquee list of players.
It also wasn’t team of the actual season, it was something under the mobile game’s social network, so we have no idea if this was a ‘today’ thing, an actual award, or what it was.
We will admit his stats are high, in both the cyber world and the real world, and he remains, statistically, the best-rated player in Scotland based on the pure stats, with sites like sofascore and whoscored putting him at number one.
But as one Rangers fan sarcastically replied to this ‘award’, ‘well, he’ll be putting that one in the trophy room alongside all the others then’.
And it’s a fair point – he’s not been a great captain, or indeed a great RB, but he has been a great scorer and assister, few would deny that.
But according to this little ditty, the world’s best XI has Liam Scales, James Tavernier and Summerville in there. They even had Bonucci in midfield.
We’re not sure we can take it too seriously.
