Portuguese journalist Sebastião Sousa Pinto has confirmed definitively, to the relief of every Rangers fan, that the club will not be taking up any notion of purchasing Fabio Silva and the hitman will return to Molineux this summer.

The striker, 21, has been ‘underwhelming’ at best for Rangers, and outright shockingly poor at worst, with some abject simulation and a real lack of any convincing performances.

4 goals in 20 appearances certainly isn’t impressive stuff for a striker who set Wolves back £35M in what must be Porto’s shining moment of getting £35M for a £1M striker.

They saw Nuno Santo coming and absolutely and utterly ripped Wolves off – it’s part of the reason the Premier League side are in such horrible loss-making condition at present, and are fending off the massive risk of FFP.

That did look a reason as to why Rangers might get Silva on the cheap, but it’s clear the decision has been taken by the club not to pursue any deal for the ex-PSV striker as well as Silva himself having no desire to remain in Glasgow.

It hasn’t worked out, pure and simple, and it’s why we question Philippe Clement’s nous for having £25M this summer to spend. If he vouched for Silva in January and even said we’d have signed him permanently if we could afford it, we have to show caution over his ability to know a good player from a bad one.

There was nothing in Silva’s CV which suggested he was the right stuff for Rangers, and frankly we’d argue the same for Mohamed Diomande stuck away in Denmark. Oscar Cortes had shone in 10 matches in Ligue 1 so that one was a bit more of a surer bet.

But the fact is, Silva will leave this summer in what is now looking a huge exodus from the club of players simply not fit to wear the jersey.

We’re delighted the forward isn’t remaining.
