Is it too strong to say Rangers should more or less bin the entire squad? We know there will be BIG overhaul this summer, but save for a small number of players we think are good enough (Butland, Souttar, Sterling, Ridvan, on-form Cantwell and fit Cortes etc) the absolute lion’s share of squad at Rangers fall considerably short of Rangers levels.
Now, we say that with caution. Was Kirk Broadfoot good enough? Nacho Novo? These two weren’t exactly outstanding, but in the Walter Smith era the man could get the most from his players and even starting the ‘weaker’ players didn’t really hurt the team.
The problem is most of Rangers’ entire squad nowdays are the weaker players, and while that’s mostly good enough to be better than the rest of the SPL, it falls miles short of where Celtic are, even if they’re not exactly outstanding themselves.
They were gifted this SPL, wrapped in a bow by a masochistic Rangers squad and a clueless manager, both elements combining to cause a horrible season end which threw away a 2-point lead and one hand on 56.
We know we’re sticking with Clement for now, but we truly do see the same cycle starting next season, despite his promises.
New signings, questionable ones included, then a modest start with a squad that isn’t working before Clement gets fired.
It’s been a pattern for 4 years now, Gerrard getting out of his own will before the board could fire him.
We’ve seen the following:
It’s not wrong is it?
But at base level, whatever you think of the manager, the players he has just aren’t good enough. In our view, including all his own signings bar Cortes.
And that needs a lot more this summer, Rangers need to step up a level in the transfer market and with the squad’s quality.
We don’t expect it to happen – we expect more random rotten signings costing us a fortune and no cohesion come next season.
But one thing most of us do agree on – this current squad, save a few players, really needs to go.
99% more like it,
