In yet another ‘staggering new stat’ reveal, Ibrox Noise can exclusively report that Rangers are absolutely terrible at corners.
Yes, in news that will surprise no one, Rangers have earned 214 corners this league season, scoring from no more than 9.
We haven’t got the exact number we’ve scored from, but we can equally confirm the number of goals from set pieces numbers 9, including corners.
Which is absolutely, ludicrously dire when it comes to efficiency.
This only highlights that shambles against Ross County when 43 shots earned us 3 goals, and further emphasises that something is badly wrong with Rangers when it comes to mopping up on dead ball situations.
Of course, top of the league, last 16, league cup trophy and all that. It’s not that bad right?
Bingo, but it could be so much better if this squad was able to exploit the opportunities it gets more efficiently.
Now, another caveat – we are not saying we should be scoring from every corner or free kick set piece, that’s nonsense.
Sportsmen just aren’t that efficient.
But that out of 214 corners we’ve only scored from probably about 3 of them (because we can think of about 6 direct free kicks we’ve nailed) is clearly not good enough and could be so much higher.
If Rangers were 10% more efficient with the chances we get, the goals for column would be absolutely ridiculous, but accurate, and reflective. We’d be out of sight.
But that corners tally is abysmal.
So why is it so bad?
Beats us in truth, there seems to be a lack of aggression when our big men go for the ball, and a lack of accuracy in delivery.
Unfortunately, that’s on Tavernier in part because he takes most of the corners.
But it’s for Clement to fix because if he can, we’d rattle the goals in left right and centre.
