Rangers fans are asking if Cyriel Dessers is already done at Ibrox, and the Nigeria international must admit he’s not enjoyed a particularly good start to life in Govan, despite his excitement at the move in the summer.
He was taken out of the firing line by Michael Beale yesterday, and within 18 minutes, replacement Danilo had nailed an outstanding header, even if he had to be withdrawn with injury.
The telling nail in Dessers’ coffin was Danilo being replaced by Abdallah Sima, who had a solid enough game in truth, arguably his best since joining.
But Dessers?
He’s nowhere near settled in.
Despite 3 curiously good assists, and one messy bundled goal, the Belgium-born striker has visibly struggled with Rangers, looking frustrated, failing to make the right runs, and generally being at odds with Michael Beale’s system, which in itself is not overly shocking.
But where does he go from here?
Sometimes signings just do not work out – there is plenty of time for the 28-year-old, and his CV is far from dire. He has experience of the Eredivisie and Serie A, the guy’s resume is not all that bad at all.
But the question will always be asked of Michael Beale, if not directly by cowardly journalists, why he replaced a goalscoring predator like Antonio Colak, who was fit, ready, and knew what the club was all about, with a more expensive rookie who’s nowhere near settled in.
It was a bad call, one of many the manager has made, and while Colak’s post-Rangers career hasn’t exploded in Parma, he absolutely shone at Ibrox – it was right club right player right time – and Beale chose to rip that up and sign Dessers.
Where now for the ex-Cremonese man?
We don’t know. Danilo’s goal was something Dessers has been miles off doing, while the introduction of Sima in Danilo’s place was a damning statement by Beale on Dessers.
We spent £6M on Cyriel, and so far it’s been a painful waste. True, those three big assists, but otherwise?
Boy is he a turkey so far or what?!
