Celtic, not even strictly needing a glut of new defenders, have signed at least two marquee ones this summer already. Rangers, desperately requiring new talent back there, only added a panic freebie in Leon Balogun.
If nothing else sums up Rangers and Michael Beale’s squad mismanagement since he joined, this is it.
We can all see how abysmal the defence is, yet this man refuses to do a thing about it, instead just overloading attack with Abdallah Sima.
Balogun we love, this is not a dig at him, he’s a good Ranger and he loves the club and the fans – he’s a top defender as well – but his fitness history is a huge concern and he was only snapped up because of a long-term injury to his namesake King. Who is now fit anyway.
This has meant there was technically no reason to sign Balogun, at least, not at that moment in time as a replacement for stricken King, yet here we are.
There were questions for sure about Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s squad management – even from Ibrox Noise, and we loved the man. His dismissal and rejection of Niko Katic was his version of what Beale did with Scotty Arfield – a player fans loved, just dumped without any real ceremony at all.
And there are legitimate questions about Beale and what he is doing when we look at how absolutely disgraceful the defence actually is, and the management of it with King’s injury and Balogun.
We lost Auston Trusty – we understand we did put a £3M bid in, but Arsenal wanted £5M no ifs or buts. So Sheffield United stole him from under our noses. Interest in Jonathan Panzo is dead, and a lot of fans didn’t want/rate him anyway.
And now? No one. There is no one on the horizon. No other high-calibre targets coming in at the rear end, and we’re relying on a whole bunch of chafe for the tiny amount of wheat we have.
It is inexplicable how badly Michael Beale has done here, and how poor his attitude has been with regards to the rearguard.
No wasting time by Brendan Rodgers, he has Vickers and has quickly added another two alpha stoppers in there too. Rangers? We have fitness-unreliable Souttar, added fitness-unreliable Balogun, and that’s our lot. The rest are mince.
What an utter mess.
I’m trying hard not to be all doom and gloom but this will be his downfall unless he addresses this with some urgency . We all know deep in our hearts if he doesn’t deal with the Tav Goldson Barasic problem it’s downhill from there folks .
