Ross Wilson lost Rangers £45M. Ex-Ibrox DoF failings laid bare

With Ryan Kent the latest Rangers player to make the move out of Ibrox, former Director of Football Ross Wilson really must take accountability of the amount of money he’s lost Rangers.

It was the Sporting Director’s (or whatever the hell his job title actually was) job to optimise the football side, to get players for as little as possible and sell for as much as possible.

In reality, Wilson critically failed at his job in this department, aside the lucky break of daylight robbing Ajax for the hopeless Calvin Bassey.

Otherwise, Ross Wilson’s deals have cost Rangers absolutely millions, and Ibrox Noise takes you through the litany of crimes we can sob quietly over:

Alfredo Morelos:

Rangers rejected £16.5M from Lille for our star striker at the peak of his Rangers career, and over a petty matter of £3.5M and ego-matching Celtic’s Dembele sale, we’ve now lost every penny of that. He will leave for free this summer and that falls on Ross Wilson and his wee man ego.

Ryan Kent:

Rangers rejected £8.5M rising to £10M from Leeds for our star winger a couple of years ago under their ex-boss Marcello Bielsa, and guess what, he leaves for nothing this summer. Yet more brilliance at the negotiating table from Wilson.

Glen Kamara:

Rangers rejected £10M in late 2019 from an unnamed club, and Kamara’s value these days is now well below £5M. He has a year on his deal but we really hope we get something this summer. This one is slightly less on Wilson and more on Kamara himself.

Joe Aribo:

Rather than getting the £10M up-front, Wilson accepted £6M rising. It will never rise because Aribo’s failed horribly at Southampton, out of his depth, and isn’t going to get the appearances clause. This was genius from Wilson.

Nathan Patterson:

Again, we accepted £12M rising to £16M and once again Patterson is nowhere near the level to get to the addons. He’s now down the pecking order at Everton having recovered from injury. Wilson up to his old tricks.

Calvin Bassey:

Ok this was genius, we admit it – we got £19M for this hopeless defender and this may rise to the full £23M but given Ajax have now dropped Bassey it might not. Wilson got this one right. Well done.

So that’s around £45M in lost cash Wilson cost Rangers, albeit with the extra £19M we thieved Ajax for Bassey, it’s only half give or take.

Overall? Ryan Kent is another example of the many failings of Ross Wilson.
