Ibrox Noise earlier posted a slightly tongue-in-cheek comment of a photo of Todd Cantwell and Nicolas Raskin and the caption of ‘another 9 of these please boss’.
The thing is, we stand by this, and the replies didn’t exactly rebuke our sentiments.
It is our firm conviction that Cantwell and Raskin are Rangers-level players, the standard we older Bears expect from the Walter eras and Champions League seasons of yesteryear.
But we feel about 90% of the rest of the squad falls painfully short of this level and really does require a huge upgrade to get back to where this club should be.
Tavernier v Alan Hutton. Tavernier out of his depth in the Champions League, Hutton tearing apart VFB Stuttgart on his debut season at that level. £9M to Spurs.
Goldson v Cuellar. Goldson part of a decent leaking goals incessantly at that level, Cuellar a rock at the back and earned his £9M move to Villa the following summer.
Further back we have Gough, Butcher, Boumsong – now it’s Ben Davies and aforementioned Goldson.
What we’re going through now reminds us a little, albeit not as dramatically, of the early 2012- days, where our fans, enthusiastic as they were, tried to defend and justify the likes of Ian Black, Anestos Argyriou, Ross Perry and Seb Faure as good enough for Rangers, because that’s what fans do. Support.
But in this day and age now, where we are trying to make a real fist of matching and passing Celtic, Goldson isn’t good enough, neither is Tavernier. One is a failed Wigan player, the other was rejected by Brighton. We just, as fans, big them up, focus on the positives, embellish them with blue-tinted specs and back them.
But the neutral, rational part of us can see that few of our players in general are truly Rangers class these days.
Scotty was, but he’s aged now and cannot be an every match player. Kamara was at his peak but isn’t interested these days. Davis was but he’s too old now, and he’s too injured too. The list goes on.
And the likes of Morelos and Kent who might once have been Rangers class are both leaving and both disinterested.
These days, we truly need major surgery, practically a whole new team. A team that doesn’t get humiliated at UCL level, for example. While Walter’s sides didn’t stun at that level (92/93 aside), they could win matches. That’s far superior to these days. And it’s superior to Celtic too – they are way inferior to Walter’s Rangers but they don’t need to be half as good as his side, because we’re presently miles and miles worse.
Cantwell and Raskin are absolutely in the right direction. 9 more of them please boss?
