Ross Wilson, because let’s face it he does the transfers, is looking at a January precontract for long-time Rangers target Kenny McLean, after the Scotland international’s contract at Norwich neared its end.

The 30-year old, currently in the Championship, is a well-known Rangers fan and would jump at the actual chance to come to Ibrox, but in a poll some time ago of our readers, the addition of the ex-Aberdeen man was one of the most unpopular prospects we’d ever surveyed, and it was a big fat no.

We’re not quite sure why, the majority being disinterested and downright sceptical of the midfielder’s qualities, so this clearly wouldn’t be a popular signing if that old opinion rings true today, but the 28-cap is a Scotland regular and surely isn’t the worst player out there?

The problem is he’s damned by being a target from some time ago, and we were led to believe Rangers (and time) have moved on – when he was 26, 27, maybe, but at 30 now we’re not exactly sure he’s a viable option any longer, although in saying that fans probably all think he’s great now, what the heck do we know?

Still, it’s this board and this Director of Football’s favourite price, with his being a free next summer. It’s true though that we desperately need fit bodies in the middle of the park, with Jacko’s unreliability, Davo’s age and Kamara’s desire to leave, bringing in some new blood is essential.

We already know about Nicolas Raskin, and Billy Gilmour is looking for an out from Brighton as well, so adding quality in that area of the park is certainly important, because not only injury but a lack of depth is a problem in midfield for sure.

Question is is Kenny McLean the right stuff to add in there? Majority of fans we asked said no, but in Ross Wilson we trust.

And yes, that was sarcasm…

Still, we’re just the paying customer so we’ll get what we’re given rather than what we want. And if that turns out to be McLean, it’s on Wilson. Mind you, isn’t everything?

  1. Ally McCoist tried to sign McLean when he was at St Mirren and I understand when he was at Aberdeen but as usual as it was Rangers they told us to piss off and quoted silly money. He eventually left Scotland to Norwich for a paltry £250, 000. Yes I would have signed him then . He’s getting on but like Arfield has great experience at a very high level with success. For a season or two yes I would sign him .
