Reports Rangers ‘failed’ to sign German striker Davie Selke appear to be based on absolutely nothing aside a misinterpretation of Aberdeen-supporting USA-based former UK ESPN commentator Derek Rae’s word.

The American-Scot commentator/pundit claims the German paper allege that Rangers’ were interested but it didn’t work out, but we can find nothing aside Rae’s tweet that confirms this story, or specifically, Rangers’ involvement.

It’s true that some clubs were interested in the Hertha man, but we can find no corroboration that Rangers were one of them, and Rae, being a Dons fan, is hardly of an infinity to all things Ibrox and we can’t really understand why he’s reporting this story.

This is a claim worth very little – even if Bild, as per Rae’s claim, added Rangers to this report, many players will reject many teams over the course of a season and that’s nothing new.

What is more telling is Rae only said Rangers’ pursuit was ‘in vain’, while all the UK press have seized on that and claimed the forward outright rejected us.

Rae also adds Basel, Copenhagen and West Brom, some decent teams in there, but it seems that for now, he’s remaining in Germany.

But honestly, who actually cares?
