Regulars will know we recently recommended Jason Denayer, and we were pleased to see every single response bar none agreed and supported this name. Not a soul gave a hoot about his Celtic spell, only citing his clear qualities and the fact he’d be a lucrative Bosman for Ibrox.

There is another though, another international-class defender who once went for £35M and is currently a free agent, without a single club yet snapping him up, and still only 31, is a former 3x league champions in three different countries and a French international as well.

Eliaquim Mangala is currently without a club, but his career is glittering – Liege, Porto, City, Valencia, Everton and St Etienne are the list of fine clubs Mangala has graced, clubs in top leagues and the small matter of his having made 34 Champions League appearances.

World class?

Well, hard to say, but his CV is about as good as any free agent’s, that’s for sure, and Rangers utterly need quality at the back given we have absolutely none.

He’s barely even had an injury the best part of two years, so this is not a player destined for the treatment table – the only issue here is wages.

Mangala’s wages probably wouldn’t be cheap, given what he can offer, but he’s the right transfer fee for this Rangers board so that helps, and his experience is not only invaluable for the Ibrox squad but he’s young enough to have plenty yet to give.

Could be worth a shot?
