Alex Lowry’s return is certainly being hyped a bit after the Auchenhowie graduate was able to feature in a recent B team fixture, amid fan favour upon the attacking midfielder.

Rangers were hard at work trying to sign a creative playmaker or two this summer following the exit of Joe Aribo and the injury to Ianis Hagi, which left Lowry as the only option for that slot.

Cue the arrivals of Tom Lawrence, who can fill that slot, and Malik Tillman.

The latter had a bright debut at Livi, and a bright start in Belgium, while Lawrence has been unable to stand out in any of the non-friendly appearances he’s made.

This has opened the door for a lot of hope being pinned on the youth academy star who at just 19 is being hailed as the next big thing.

And in fairness, Rangers fans rate him very highly despite limited pitch time last season – but he does look promising.

And this is the caution we urge – putting so much expectation on a 19 year old isn’t ideal, because one error and he’s abused Barisic style, Sands style Souttar style you name it – Rangers fans aren’t shy to hurl rubbish at players whatever their age when they don’t deliver, and Lowry would be no different.

Is he the ‘answer’? No, he’s another cog in the Rangers machine and we wish him well, but we’re not going to pin the hopes of a season’s ambition on the merits of a 19 year old lad who’s not played very much for the seniors and is only just coming back from injury.

Is it ‘good enough old enough’ in this case? We’d suggest that saying isn’t exactly accurate, because the ones saying it are usually the first to abuse the individual if they don’t live up to expectations.

Gio will manage Lowry the way he sees fit, but we’re not pinning our hopes on him, nor should we. The lad will sink or swim, but it shouldn’t define Rangers’ season. We certainly want to see him play but we don’t want him subjected to ridiculous pressure.
