Just when the Calvin Bassey transfer hubbub died down it came right back to the fore today with breaking news that both Dutch giants Ajax and PL side Brighton are interested in the Nigeria star.

Brighton look close to selling Marc Cucurella Saseta to Man City, even though the Spain international went to the Seagulls’ training camp in, yes, Portugal, so we’ll see if their situation changes – Cucurella is a LB.

And Ajax have as good as just sold Argentina international CB Lisandro Martínez to Man Utd for around £45M and are said to be looking at Bassey as a quick replacement.

Bassey’s performance in the Europa League final opened many doors for him personally – the stand out display earned the outfield MOTM with only Frankfurt’s goalie Kevin Trapp actually getting the gong.

And the Nigerian’s stock remains sky high even if transfer news around him had abated.

It’s all go again today though after Talksport’s Alex Crook confirmed Ajax are interested and Brighton are monitoring him.

The ‘problem’ for Rangers is Bassey has been as good in both positions this year – as CB nothing is getting past him, as LB he’s showing extraordinary athleticism.

In many ways Bassey is going down as Steven Gerrard’s career-best signing as a manager, and this ‘problem, this versatility means that when teams lose a key CB or LB, they’re look at Bassey for both those slots.

So, double the number of suitors are there in this case.

Will we survive the window with his signature intact at Ibrox?

Time will tell.

  1. Still not a big fan of Bassey at CB but accept he can improve. Though it’s his versatility which makes him such a key player. He was outstanding in the Europa Final though he did make 3 big mistakes. He was faultless in the Scottish Cup Final.
