Three down two to go as Rangers ‘surplus five’ move on

As we told you earlier, Glenn Middleton’s exit from Rangers is now confirmed, a three-year deal to Dundee United announced for a fee of around £150,000.

Indeed, of the ‘surplus five’ we told you at the start of the window were instructed they weren’t in Gio’s plans, three are either gone or confirmed as leaving.

Jake Hastie and Glenn Middleton are the two to have formally left, both sold for modest six-figure sums and both leave with our best wishes, particularly Middleton who didn’t get the best deal at Ibrox in truth.

True, his own developments went askew, but Steven Gerrard made no real effort to get the lad back on track, farming him out on loan instead. Mind you, is it the manager’s job to hold players’ hands?

Regardless, we wish Glenn good luck at Tannadice.

However, it was the confirmed announcement Niko Katic is to leave that upset most people.

Some believe he’s not good enough, most think he is and got short shrift at Rangers.

Whatever the truth behind why it went wrong for Katic, he’s free to find a new employer, and that leaves only Jack Simpson and Stephen Kelly to officially follow.

Neither of them are in Rangers’ plans going forward and both must head out for the benefit of their careers.

Three down, two to go. And we can’t see anyone else joining them but for surprise bids…

If the manager’s job is not to manage, what does he do? I doubt if the guy would have made the cut at Ibrox but it was handled very badly however you look at it.
