Rangers’ preseason ended with a closed-door friendly v Queen’s Park, and at half time we were losing 1-2.

The teamsheet was as below:

RANGERS: McCrorie, Jack, Davis, Sands (Zukowski, 65), Wright (McCann, 65), Davies (Katic, 46), Sakala, Arfield, King, Devine, Tillman (Lovelace, 65).

There is enough quality there that to lose two very sloppy goals draws some concern. Enough said about the first half – it is pre-season and those playing are the ones short on game time. Thankfully the Spiders gave us a gift of an own goal.

However – enter Lovelace…

This kid is electric. – A second half, 65th minute substitute and he saved some real blushes for Rangers. Fifteen minutes from time and the youngster Lovelace who we signed from Millwall won a penalty, Davis’ effort from the spot was saved by Heraghty.

Undeterred by the penalty miss and full of running Lovelace controlled the ball well in a congested Queen’s Park box and found a pocket of space to slide his effort past Heraghty. Shortly after this, the youngster was on hand again to deliver a thundered, third goal for the Gers to take the lead. Mateusz Zukowski, who did also impress drove down the right flank and picked out an ever-running Lovelace on the edge of the box. Great finishing at the front post.

So…. young Lovelace. To me he looks like he is way older than his years. Millwall were gutted to lose him, and he has already played in the Championship and the FA Cup and held his own by all accounts. This kid is predatory. He’s strong and just has the natural instincts like Super Ally, he just seems to get into the right places, he just knows where to be. One closed doors match isn’t enough to make the first team, however with the lack of depth upfront through injury, he is an option. Every player in the roster for this match is in the first team pool, it was the 16-year-old that bailed us out and got the win. I hope the kid gets some 1st team moments this season, I think we have a real deal player on our hands.
