Just how good is new signing Tom Lawrence?

The Wales international, 28, was confirmed today as Rangers’ third summer capture, but his position is a curious one.

The fact he’s a left winger means either that he’s a replacement for Ryan Kent, he’s competition for Kent, or he’s going to compliment him via flank interchange.

Because while Lawrence isn’t world class, he is a good player, with some solid stats for the Championship.

The most telling one is the fact he had the fifth most shots in the whole league – so he’s certainly NOT afraid to have a pop (11 of them ended up as goals, with 5 assists).

But there are other useful ones too – he ranks well for key passes and dribbles – not as the best in the league, but still very respectable numbers.

He is certainly unlikely to have been signed as squad depth – his CV and the fact he’s turned down some strong rivals suggests he expects to have a major say in the first team.

As with all Gio signings, the lad will get our 100% backing, even if he’s never really scaled the heights to be a PL player. As a free signing, he was clearly worth bringing in.

And it is crucial to note the numbers he achieved last season were with the doomed Derby, who ended up in League One.

So not only were his stats among the best, but he did it with a team destined to go down.

So is this a good addition – as always, In Gio We Trust.

  1. Could be a good addition to the squad, the Championship is a very high standard and having seen him on TV he looks as though he’ll handle Scottish football . It’ll be a big step up to the Famous and also European and hopefully CL . Wish him well .

  2. Seems like a decent addition. He’s free and seemed to be in high demand, at least at Championship level. But is he good enough to take us to the next level? I have my doubts.
I also note that last season he got 11 yellow and 2 red cards. The referees up here are gonna love him.

  3. Hadn’t seen the card count Robrob notes. But I think he is a good call, did well in a relegated team, would have stayed up but for the point deduction. “Price is what you pay, value is what you get”
I believe we have improved defence if Bassey stays, will buy again if he goes. Midfield is stronger for kids coming through. Midfield/Attack has lost Aribo, but has replaced him with Lawrence, possibly Matondo, and Lowry coming through. Attack has lost a player we didn’t want and replaced him with Colak who should not be worse and may prove a sound buy. Another striker because of injury would seem to be the only thing we actually need now.
Club is doing well and is in safe hands

  4. A rams fan here if the coach can get the best out of him he can win games for you.His performances last season with what went on at our club tells you the character is there he just needs to produce it more often.
