Rangers close in on major signing as he makes a confession

We must say Ridvan Yilmaz’ quote from last night got some tongues wagging on Ibrox Noise.

We raised some attention to it last night, suggesting it might have been lost in translation, because we know if a player going to Celtic had said this, our fans would be laughing at it and deriding them.

Ridvan was ‘reported’ to have said:

“I am very happy, I am making my dream come true. I had a dream of making money and leaving this club and I made it happen.”

The response to this was overwhelmingly defensive – ‘why shouldn’t he make money’ and ‘what’s wrong with him being honest’.

Both statements are absolutely fine – it’s just we’ve never once heard of a player extolling the virtues of getting rich off the back of joining Rangers.

Let’s be realistic – wages are a massive deal and the bigger the wage the most the chance you can sign a player as good as Yilmaz.

But it’s not something an incoming player says. We have no problem with him picking us for money and for bettering his career – but we’re a little disappointed he admitted the first part.

Now, some are reckoning this WAS lost in translation and he meant his dream was to make his club, Besiktas, money – and if that’s accurate it’s about as noble as it gets, and reminds us of Amo in the early 00s who left for Blackburn to earn Rangers money, and said so. Same with Davo – he didn’t say it, but he refused to sign for Southampton till Rangers had £800,000 in the bank for him.

So basically it’s either he’s boasting about his dreams of becoming rich, or he’s proud he’s earned his club a big payday.

One of them is noble, one is maybe not so much.

But some Rangers fans would defend ANYTHING a player said so what do we know and why would our opinion matter more?

It doesn’t.

End of the day we have a wonderful, arguably potentially world class left back arriving at Ibrox. Third one.

We do well in that position!
