£5M free agent could be solution to Rangers injury blow

Filip Helander’s latest injury blow brings defence back into sharp focus.

As things stand, the only guaranteed fit two defenders Rangers actually have are Connor Goldson and Niko Katic, unless you count utility man Calvin Bassey.

Leon Balogun is gone (but wasn’t reliable anyway) and John Souttar’s fitness has always been a bone of contention.

Do Rangers need another guaranteed reliable and fit CB?

We suggested the other day it was an area that doesn’t need any new additions, but on reflection, coupled with Helander’s latest ailment and interest milling around Calvin Bassey we’re beginning to wonder if we shouldn’t look into this again.

And a free agent Rangers were strongly linked to, and still are, is former Vitesse stopper Riechedly Bazoer, who, with a market value of over £5M and aged just 25 (not to mention being a Dutch international) could be an excellent and maybe more important signing than we realised.

Linked to a host of fine European clubs already, including Marseille and Gladbach, Bazoer could solve Rangers’ defensive issues and help tighten an area that might just be looking a little loose now Helander is AWOL.

He has missed around 26 matches in his whole career with injury, which is not half bad a rate at all and doesn’t point to someone with a major injury history.

Because that’s the last kind of player we need to sign.

And his CV, with history at Wolsburg, Porto and Utrecht does make him a highly desirable defender Rangers could use.

Could the Dutch connection at Rangers give us an advantage here?

Up to Gio.

  1. 100 % agree ,defence has been a worry for me with hellander and souter there ,any time we have signed injury prone players from previous clubs it has never worked out well .
Dont even know if katic can be relied on ,so its squeeky bum time .
Like the look of this big chap ….go get him gio ! .

  2. Sign him because of his CV not because we have potential injury worries. Definitely sign him if Bassey goes. Though it might spell the end for Katic.
