Rangers have this morning formally been linked with a stunning move for Gareth Bale, after the Real Madrid winger confirmed he is now a free agent and is looking for his next career step.

Rangers, and English giants Spurs and Newcastle have also been connected with a move for the former Tottenham star, and of course in Spurs’ case that’s his former side, albeit his loan move there a year ago was underwhelming. Meanwhile Newcastle have all the money these days. Whether Bale would fit either of these sides today is another matter.

In Spurs’ favour is they did secure Champions League football next season, a huge carrot, one that Newcastle don’t have, and one that Rangers do.

Is Bale to Rangers realistic?

The wage cut Gareth Bale would have to take would eclipse even the one countryman Aaron Ramsey would have to ‘suffer’ – Bale is around £600,00 a week, or was, (the poor baby is currently earning no money), and if the absolute fantasy football of his arriving in Govan was to happen, he’s looking at no more than a tops of £30,000.

Quite the drop.

Is it feasible?

Ramsey will obviously have Bale’s ear and frankly we’re not that sure that our former loan signing will be that positive about us.

The fans weren’t particularly onside with him overall and he didn’t play that much when he was fit. Obviously off the pitch we’re a professional club with an awesome stadium, and if there’s one thing Ramsey will remember for the rest of his life it’s the atmosphere that night v Leipzig.

So hopefully, if this is any way a goer, Ramsey bigs us up.

Do we want Bale?

Make no mistake, he’s world class. He is literally one of the best players in the world and it would shatter any signing in Rangers’ history, bar only Gazza, who was the equivalent back in the day.

Just because it went sour in Madrid is nothing to do with Bale’s ability – he is top, top class, and has wasted about 3 years of his career because of politics at the Bernabeu.

So Rangers would be getting a world class talent with nothing to prove but everything to play for.

Any chance?

Well, only if he’s taking a BIG wage cut.

It is silly season after all…
