Some of the most telling presences today for the new season were players who have been on the outside looking in.

After our Zukowski piece earlier, it was a delight to see the Pole back in training today, having returned at long last. Lots of fans claim his absence was injury-related, but this was never official. Either way, it’s good to see him back, because the lad is a £3M player.

Jack Simpson might be looking at a move away, but he was present and accounted for and seemed in good spirits as Gio put the squad through their paces.

And while Niko Katic’s place at Ibrox is far from clear, the huge Croat is nevertheless back in training hoping he can finally force his way into the first team.

A bunch of the younger lads were there, as is always the way for the first day of pre-season, with the likes of Weston and Hossler in attendance, but there was still no place for young Nnamdi Ofoborh who we got info on some weeks ago, and will share in another entry.

The usual guard were definitely there – Tav, Goldson, Jacko, Davo, Arfield along with McGregor and McLaughlin, but these guys are ever-reliable and we always expect them there.

Expect much coverage of pre-season over the next few weeks.
