One sale and four contracts expire – summer begins for Rangers

As of midnight last night, Rangers lost four players to contracts expiring, and one to a sale.

Allan McGregor, Leon Balogun, Connor Goldson, Andy Firth, and Cedric Itten are all either gone permanently, or currently out of contract and not attached.

Steven Davis got his deal at the eleventh hour and will remain for at least one more year, and we’ll have a piece on him later.

Itten departed to Young Boys, as we reported some days ago – the deal was confirmed this morning, and he heads off to Wankdorf for around £1.5M. Good luck to him, and may he get his career back on track.

The other four are more interesting.

All we know is:

Goldson is gone – there’s no word on him accepting the offered deal, and lots of word on his imminent arrival at newly-promoted Nottingham Forest on a free. EDIT yes we’re well aware of people coming in and attacking this article based on what happened a day later, but not a fan on planet earth knew he’d stay, and that’s because he changed his mind literally as we typed this article out.

McGregor said he’d talk to the club, and that’s all we heard last. He wanted to see what the best path forward was for him, his family and the club. So time will tell if he signs a new deal as a free agent.

Then there’s Balogun. He wants to stay, but he’s such an injury case. This is only feasible if he’s pay as you play.

And Firth. There’s absolutely nothing to say on him.

So, 3 significant players out of contract.

It’s very telling that Davis was eager for a new deal, and one arrived before the window opened and his existing one expired, where the other three all saw those contracts expire at midnight with nothing emerging to replace them.

This tells us Leon Balogun has a low chance of getting a new deal, and McGregor may have decided to hang his gloves up. Goldson has already said a cryptic goodbye.

We’ll see what the coming days present, but at present, Itten is definitely gone, and the other three quite possibly are too.

All to watch.

  1. I’m pleased for Stevie D he’s still got plenty give on and off the pitch. I’m hoping that we start getting our strategy going. I think we will sell at least 2 …Kent Aribo probably the favourites to go. I hope to see a fit Morelos get at least 2/3 new strike partners/options . Roofe also might go .Onwards 56

  2. Goldson has just a 4 year deal totally out of the blue. Can’t say I’m overjoyed about it but it is what it is and hopefully he can be part of a successful Rangers going forward.

    • I’m a little disappointed, I understand the cost replacement thing and I suppose the continuity. Not sure how most of the fans will take it…if he makes a Seville type fuck up he’ll get total pelters …Let’s see
