5-player exodus at Ibrox as Rangers get serious

On top of Niko Katic, GVB is reportedly set to follow up the sale of Cedric Itten with the exits of Stephen Kelly, Glenn Middleton, Jack Simpson and Jake Hastie, none of whom are in his plans going forward.

While Kelly has a little goodwill for some impressive pre-season displays for the Famous, overall, this clump of players is the epitome of ‘dead wood’, with none of them even being good enough really for Rangers’ bench and barely turning out for the reserves.

Kelly is the exception in a way, but Rangers have Ryan Jack, John Lundstram, Steven Davis, Glen Kamara, James Sands and Scott Arfield ahead of him which is quite literally impossible for him, and he’s better moving on and finding football elsewhere.

The other three, Hastie, Simpson, and Middleton are all completely surplus and Rangers would do well to ship them out even at modest cost to the club with a mutual consent or two. Hastie was a horrific signing, Simpson even worse, and Middleton ultimately just didn’t develop as we’d hoped.

So this mini-exodus would ultimately see Itten, Katic, Hastie, Simpson, Kelly and Middleton moving onto pastures new.

Exactly the kind of trimming the squad needs.

  1. Good news. Pity about Middleton. I thought we’d found a cracker there. Just a reminder that youth potential doesn’t always work out.

  2. Kelly is one I’d keep if we can. Always stood out when I watched the B Team and was outstanding in the pre season friendlies, felt it was a shame Gerrard hadn’t integrated him more before he moved on. Even if it meant another season on loan at a higher standard than he played at while organising a one year extension. Was highly thought of at Salford and showed last night what he’s capable of for Scotland. I’d love for him to be the long term replacement for Davis, really think their is a top player in there but I also thought that with Middleton so shows what the armchair fans really know!

  3. Why buy sands at 4 million when he rarely starts a game end his loan and keep Kelly who has a lot of potential and will learn from the players around and the money saved could be spent elsewhere

  4. Kelly could turn out to be a big mistake. He has a lot of first team experience outwith the club and is clearly very talented. Players ahead of him, Jack (injury prone), Davis and Arfield ((wrong end of 30), Sands (not established or guaranteed to stay), Kamara (could still leave for a club south). We aren’t that well off for squad depth if we have a few on the treatment table. McCann, Lowry and Kelly could play a big role in the future if they are coached well.
