The link with Crystal Palace’s Jack Butland is definitely a calibre above some of the underwhelming names connected with a slot in between Rangers’ sticks.

Naturally we’re talking about an England international (ex-England?) who has an outstanding 87 appearances in the PL with 21 shut outs and 130 goals conceded – it’s not bad at all and it’s more along the lines of that market we were talking about before.

He’s plied his trade at that level with Palace and Stoke City, so we’re not talking Liverpool who hog the ball here, we’re talking about lower PL sides who face constant attacks, and at that level to have only conceded a little more than one goal a game is impressive, not to mention around a quarter of them featuring clean sheets.

He’s a good goalie alright, and if we’re honest Celtic did well to get Joe Hart from the same market – so getting 29-year old Butland (out of contract next summer) would be a shrewd move from the club for sure.

A replacement for McGregor? There’s no question the goalie is reaching the end, and while talks have taken place over his future, nothing has yet manifested as a new deal – we do have Jon McLaughlin and Robby McCrorie as well.

But Butland is definitely an upgrade over both deputies and if McGregor was to hang up his gloves, the ex-Leeds Utd man would be a very competent replacement for sure.

One to keep an eye on.
