Rangers have reportedly joined the growing race for Derby’s Tom Lawrence after it was confirmed the Pride Park captain will not be signing a new deal and will be heading off on a free this summer.
Following Wayne Rooney’s side’s recent troubles, there could be a little upheaval at County this summer, and the captain heading off is a major shift.
However, Rangers’ interest is intriguing, and suggests a need for quality depth and competition because Lawrence is a left winger, same as Ryan Kent, and Rangers, after once upon a time having a litany of options there, now have just the ex-Liverpool man. Unless you count utility attacker Scott Wright.
So the Wales international, over 20 caps, would be a very handy free signing to make for that position as deputy, and his club stats are certainly promising:
50 goals and 40 assists in the Championship in 264 appearances is a very good number, almost 100 goals/assists in roughly 250 isn’t to sniff at.
And 23 caps is ok too, even if 3 goals (no assists) is less impressive at the age of 28.
The problem for Lawrence is Rangers are now in a different market (another entry on that later) and we’re not sure a bog standard slightly above average Championship winger is good enough for our club any more.
Furthermore, he’s only made 4 career PL appearances – hardly marquee.
Still, in Gio We Trust.
When signing we’re going to have to make sure that the players coming in are of a quality and fitness to see us through the SPL and Cup games not forgetting European matches. Quality comes at a price and we mustn’t hold back on this if we are to continue to be a force in forthcoming seasons.
