Rangers are shopping in a new market for the Champions League

Earlier on we discussed the ‘different’ market that Rangers are in, and while some fans may think we’ve not got a pot to p*ss in and Gio will have pennies this summer, we can assure you he’ll have cash.

But that’s not the point we’re getting at.

Until this summer, Rangers were getting, at best, midrange European continental players (Sakala from Belgium, Katic from Croatia), Championship players (Roofe from Leeds) or SPL players (Jack and Wright from Aberdeen).

There were a few PL players in there (Goldson, Arfield and Kent) but none were a fixture for their side and were just squad.

Things, following Seville, have changed.

We are now in a much more coveted market – we are not having to fish for dregs in lower divisions, and guys like James Sands and Mateusz Żukowski are now no longer our target standard of player.

In short, we can look at the top five divisions in Europe, and while we aren’t going to be able to afford Lionel Messi any time soon, we can look at the more modest sides (and one or two of the big ones) in these leagues and monitor their squad.

Look at the Xavi Simons stuff resurfacing, and then there’s talk over keeping Aaron Ramsey.

The market we’re in has to be better than English League One, Championship or the lower SPL these days – anything from these divisions we take in is for squad, not for a first team player.

Because we’re UEL finalists and working towards CL group stage next season.

It also works in reverse.

Year or two ago we used to talk about £20M for Barisic, Kamara or Aribo – now that’s a quite accepted number and the mockery we used to get for those prices, including from some of our own fans, has reduced hugely thanks to Nathan Patterson and now the circa £30M we seek for Calvin Bassey.

If we want a serious assault on the CL next season we must shop at that standard.

And now, we can.
