Why Rangers fans got it wrong over Kemar Roofe

If one player is being unfairly lambasted more than most it’s Kemar Roofe. The Jamaica forward deputised for the irreplaceable Alfredo Morelos on Sunday and it’s safe to say he was more than a spot criticised for his ineffective display.

The problem is, it’s not his fault.

We spoke about it beforehand – Roofe is no target man, he’s no centre forward and he’s no focal point. He has always thrived as a flexible wing man, supporting the attack and making runs in, Scotty Arfield style, with goals not far away.

As the main attack fulcrum, he simply doesn’t have the game or the makeup in his locker to play that role right.

Which is why he’s thrived in recent weeks as a sub. When the opponent is tired, his fresh legs come on, and ADD to the attack, exploiting late defensive weariness to pick pockets and nab goals.

This has given some fans false expectations he could run the line himself, and that he was able to bag goals as the 9 on his own.

Not so.

Kemar’s best game overall is a utility winger – he can’t beat a man, and he lacks strength, plus he isn’t very quick, but he does make good runs and he’s a hard worker, not to mention a clinical finisher.

But he’s like a vulture – he exploits scraps, he picks at weaknesses and he takes advantage of mistakes. He’s just not the kind of forward to actually cultivate those fallacies, not like Alfredo does.

Which is why Roofe is a useful asset, even as a starter on the right now and then, but he cannot live up to top billing up front, and he’s being unfairly criticised for trying to fill a role he couldn’t hope to excel in.

This is why Alfie is rather irreplaceable at present. We didn’t get Dykes in 2020 (who Ibrox Noise preached to the end as a good addition) and he’d have been an excellent deputy for Morelos, meaning there’s just no one in our squad up to filling that role.

And Roofe couldn’t be further away from it if he tried.

But do go easy on him.

There are far worse contributors in the blue than Kemar Roofe.

  1. Maybe there’s worse but they anit getting game time he is, to be fair I don’t think he’s good enough should have be gone last season this season is a must would rather see a youth take his place at least they would be more exciting to watch, couldn’t be worse.

  2. Good comments I too was really disappointed when we signed Itten in preference to Dykes who was better and cheaper ffs . It was yet another Gerrad /Beale mistake. Roofe tries hard but Morelos he is not.
