Ibrox Noise ran a poll some time ago, to ask in March who your POTY was.

80% of the replies were for Calvin Bassey.

Last night the club awarded him YPOTY but the senior award went to James Tavernier, the anointed Players’ Player of the Year.

This is the one footballers want the most.

With all due respect they don’t really care that much what the fans think – it’s nice, it is, and it’s nice to be popular. Allan McGregor won the fans’ award last season and was very touched by it.

But the one they crave is endorsement from their fellow pros, who understand the game, who related to them, and whose respect they work hard to earn.

Which is why the most important award was to Tav, and he certainly earned it.

While he, like the rest, didn’t have the best period up till Steven Gerrard’s departure, after the arrival of Gio his own performances improved and overall, he’s been the most consistent performer this season in blue.

His stats, of course, as usual, have been ludicrous for a RB, for a defender, but we’re used to that.

It’s the general level he’s maintained that earns him the prize.

Bassey is extremely popular, for how he’s improved compared with his debut season, and how he’s become a mainstay, his versatility making him valuable.

But Tavernier deserves the award. He’s given a tonne.

Interestingly, Ibrox Noise put out another poll in March – we posted a pic of Tav and asked fans if they agreed with the notion of him being POTY.

Only 5% agreed with it.

Which goes to show what the majority of football fans know about the Beautiful Game…

  1. If the award was for most improved player then it would certainly go to Bassey but as you say his numbers show there was only ever one guy who truly deserves this.
