All not lost as Rangers throw everything into UEL

Ibrox Noise’s Kevin yesterday penned a fine piece discussing some possibilities moving forward for the Famous.

Some of the ideas were out there, but the willing to offer solutions and be creative is far more constructive than simply complaining, so his contributions and ideas were valuable.

And one of the most intriguing notions for the road ahead is to throw quite frankly everything into the UEL.

Ok, let’s immediately pin the caveat to the wall and remind ourselves we’ll likely have to overcome Braga without Alfredo Morelos at all.

Whether we’ll have the Colombian back for any of this season remains to be seen, but Gio didn’t look too positive when discussing the striker’s prognosis.

He is 99% certain to miss both Braga legs, so we’d have to do it without him.

That makes a previously negotiable tie a lot more difficult, because as we saw v Celtic, this Rangers site is a shadow of itself when the buffalo soldier is not up top.

It has nothing do with his goals, and everything to do with how he drags defenders around, makes space for others, and bullies everyone who challenges him. He also wins a tonne of fouls and is superb for taking the ball aerially.

In short, he’s a few inches short of being the perfect centre forward.

And that work and ethic is dreadfully missed, with this absence keenly felt v Celtic.

He’s been pivotal to Rangers’ success up till now, and we’ll have to go to Portugal without him.

But, this is a slight side point, and peripheral at that – Rangers still can salvage this season, with an unlikely UEL triumph.

It falls to Gio to find a way to compensate for the loss of the Colombian at least v Braga, and change the system to work without him. He’s shown outstanding adaptability but the loss of Alfie really pushes his skills in that area. And he was unable to succeed in the last two OFs.

But Europe is different.

Can Gio do it without el-bufalo?

Anything is possible – Rangers have been a monster in Europe, and we absolutely know how to play at that level. We even feel that the side has a chance without Morelos, if the manager’s continental acumen can find the way to play otherwise.

The league is likely gone. And many fans are wishing everything including the kitchen sink is now thrown at the UEL, at our strongest competition.

Might not be the worst idea…
