James Tavernier rated as one of the best in Europe
GLASGOW, SCOTLAND - APRIL 25: James Tavernier of Rangers celebrates after scoring the open goal during the William Hill Scottish Cup match between Rangers and St Johnstone at Ibrox Stadium on April 25, 2021 in Glasgow, Scotland. One look at James Tavernier’s rating on whoscored last night says it all, almost 9/10, 8.85 to be exact.

Ibrox Noise recently proposed the captain as POTY, and frankly it was only a minority who agreed, and yet this has easily been his most complete season as a Rangers player.

Indeed, what we found curious was those who disagreed on Tavernier argued our ‘rotten defence’ was why, and anyone part of that defence couldn’t be a contender.

So they chose Bassey instead…

The reality is the defence hasn’t been great domestically, but it’s been world class in Europe, as our piece earlier demonstrates.

And Tavernier, regardless of how good it’s been overall domestically or continentally, has been absolutely outstanding from the start of the season.

Defensively he’s contributed plenty, with an overall domestic rating of 7.74 which is second only to Celtic’s David Turnbull, but of course Rangers’ man hasn’t been out since December.

And attack-wise he’s been up there with the best in Europe, two off lead goalscorer in the UEL, not unlike his team mate Alfie.

He is also rated 18th best player in the whole Europa League, and of around 700 players that’s not bad going. In the interests of fairness Celtic’s Jota is 6th, but he was out of this tournament ages ago and only played 5 times. Tavernier has 8 appearances.

Tavernier gets a raw deal from fans, including, formerly ourselves at Ibrox Noise.

He quite simply never gets the credit he’s entitled to, is never praised in the way he should be, and his occasional errors are often the only thing he’s remembered for.

Despite this sensational season on his part, we know most of you are already shaking your head disagreeing with the sentiments, and just want to slag him off as not good enough.

No matter what Tav achieves, he will never be accepted by a vast chunk of our fans, and always criticised.

It comes with the territory, unfortunately.

  1. I think fans get confused with Tavernier the player and Tavernier the Captain. For me the Captain falls well short but I think he’s an excellent footballer who could easily play at a much higher level. Just look at Man Utd’s £50m right back Wan Bassaka if you don’t believe me. Tavernier was absolutely outstanding last night.
I would take a slight issue with our defence being world class. I thought we were very shaky through the middle in the first 25 minutes and were very lucky to get away without conceding a goal. Both full backs were excellent and Lundstram settled things down when he went in there and also brought the best out of Balogun.
