Gio is under major pressure to deliver Rangers the cup

Rangers travel to Dens in a critical must-win cup match, with the enormity of the club’s cup fails the past decade ringing loudly in everyone’s ears.

It is a literal travesty, disgraceful shambles that a club of this gravity and this size, even taking into account The Journey, has not won a single significant domestic cup since the late, great Walter Smith was our manager.

Clubs way smaller with way inferior budgets have picked up plenty of cups the past decade, but Rangers for some reason, some inexplicable bizarre unacceptable reason just have not been able to secure a piece of tournament silverware.

We’ve been put out by Hibs, Aberdeen, St Mirren, you name it – average teams who were able to win themselves the whole thing.

And The Journey is no excuse – we’ve been 6 years back in the SPL, with a budget way in excess of what St Johnstone had, and yet been totally unable to crack that cup egg.

Which is why winning today, even though it’s only v the struggling Dundee, is absolutely beyond must-win.

This tournament is vital. It’s the first time a domestic cup has become arguably almost as important as winning the league – the symbolism of finally laying a horrible ghost to rest.

Gio must get it right – this is his first cup match in charge of Rangers against a side anything above League Two, and while Dundee are hardly Real Madrid, it’s still a major step up, and it’s on their patch.

So there is pressure today, and for all the Euro heroics, Rangers cannot come back to earth with a wallop with a bad result.

Get it done, Gers.
