The one good thing to come out of Sunday’s game is even neutrals are now saying it is time to bring in VAR.

Two years ago, on Thu 9 Jan 2020, Ewan Murray of the Guardian wrote,

“The Scottish Professional Football League does an impressive job in creating a perception of wanting discussion over VAR to disappear. Speaking in September 2018, its chief executive, Neil Doncaster, essentially spelled out every reason why this use of technology may not be valid in Scotland. When approached regarding an update this week, the league issued a similarly icy reply.

Fast forward two years, and this just week the ESPN calculated that in the 20-21 season there were 128 goals and incidents in the English Premier league that were caught by VAR.

This led to 32 goals being allowed and 31 goals disallowed for fouls and being offside; and VAR also caught 25 penalties, of which only 4 were missed.

And in this season of the English Premier League, 85 goals have already been reviewed by VAR.

The fact is, when there are millions, in the case of England hundreds of millions landing on someone’s dinner plate for winning the league, there is every reason to make sure the best team actually does win the league, and it is not the ref giving their favourite team a helping hand.

So, if Celtic and the SPFL come out against it, it will only confirm what we already know.

Celtic know that dodgy decisions always go their way (we proved that fact on Ibrox Noise a couple of years ago when we showed all the bad decisions had cost us double digit points) and they also know the introduction of VAR would seriously hinder their chance of winning both trophies and the league.

The fact is Katic’s famous shirt-pull which resulted in a penalty in the game against Celtic (and resulted in Gerrard dropping Katic from the team) is standard everyday play for every other team in Scotland. I, for one, can’t remember the last time we were given a penalty when any of our opponents tried to change shirts with our players before full time, or used our players as climbing posts to get their heads to the ball.

So, will VAR be introduced in Scotland. Perhaps, but only if we start ramping up the Ibrox Noise.

And this is where we need to start demanding VAR’s introduction.

When £30M to £40 million (minimum) is on the plate for winning the league, there are a lot of reasons for making sure our refs get their decisions right.

My God, we invented the game.

Are the SPFL really happy we are so far behind now?
