Media hound Boyd ‘buoyed’ by McGregor as ‘mask’ talk grows
GLASGOW, SCOTLAND - JANUARY 02: Ex Rangers player Kris Boyd is seen during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Celtic at Ibrox Stadium on January 02, 2021 in Glasgow, Scotland. Oh how the media leapt on Boyd’s comments on McGregor’s mask. Oh how they leapt on it and deliberately and systematically hounded the man into apologising, including McGregor himself who ‘had a chat’ with the former Rangers striker.

Let’s have a wee look at what Boydy said:

“The fact he managed to get through the 90 minutes without anyone testing out that face mask is another story.”

Boyd was forced into ‘clarifying’ that he only meant it was ridiculous that no one in a blue shirt got close to McGregor.

But of course, the only grounds for thinking the ex-Rangers striker meant anything else are one of two things:

1: A deliberate ‘let’s be offended’ mentality which is beginning to take over.
2: The possibility some folk actually thought Boyd meant for someone to hurt McGregor, in which case that says more about them than Boyd.

The way he put it in his column was deliberately ‘Scottish’, nothing more.

Ibrox Noise was a victim of this nonsense as well, from some of our own fans, when we suggested any ‘supporter’ who wanted Gio fired after Wednesday (and there were a few) was either the kind of fan we didn’t understand, or was more than likely from the east.

Now, anyone with any sense knows ‘from the east’, in Glaswegian terms, means a Celtic fan. It was not a geographical reference, and we know many fine Bears live in the east of the city.

But this didn’t stop the abuse coming in from those deciding to take it literally, and whine that they lived in the east and how dare we say this about them. The abuse got very personal including slurs on the site and accusations we were run by Celtic fans…

And this is the new pandemic. Forget Covid – it’s people deliberately misinterpreting honest comments and twisting them into something they can be offended by.

And Boyd’s become a victim of that too – and he’s been forced into retracting the comments by those who want to attack a Rangers man ‘just because’.

We’re sure someone somewhere will find all this offensive as well…

  2. Hay Boyd said was absolutely bang on. He wasn’t suggesting that someone went and smacked McGregor in the face. He was merely pointing out that McGregor probably approached the game with some trepidation that he might, even by accident, get a smack in the face. A few good honest tackles would’ve completely appropriate.
And if McGregor doesn’t want a smack in the face I suggest that he shouldn’t goad and disrespect his opponents (i.e. Barisic).
