On the eve of Rangers v Borussia, Ryan Kent has explained that under Giovanni van Bronckhorst, he is now playing as a proper winger.
The Rangers flanker, 25, found his game quite narrow under Steven Gerrard, who didn’t really use wingers at all, instead relying on Borna Barisic and James Tavernier at FB for the width.
Under Gio, however, the two FBs are much more reserved, and Kent has been let off the leash, so to speak, to play the way he’s actually supposed to.
It would of course be revisionism to claim only now are we seeing the best of Kent, given he put in some titanic displays under Gerrard, but his performance v Dortmund has been widely regarded as his most complete display as a Rangers player, combining wingplay with defence to devastating effect.
And his admission he’s now playing as a proper conventional winger these days is a major part of Gio’s system, even if the manager is still struggling to find an opposite number to compliment him.
It sure as heck worked in the first leg, here’s to see if Rangers can get another one tonight.
