£4M Defender hints Rangers move in the summer

Rangers defensive target Danilho Doekhi has confirmed he will leave Vitesse in the summer, and strongly hinted Rangers is where he will go.

The £4M-rated 23-year old stopper, out of contract this year, is wanted by a number of clubs, including Rangers, Atalanta and Dinamo Zagreb, but he has revealed a winter exit wasn’t on the cards while equally admitting he will not be extending his deal in Arnhem.

He said:

“I think the club would like to extend with me, but I hope they also understand that I want to take a new step after four years. I think I’m ready for that.”

All reasonably promising, and when quizzed on Rangers, he said:

“I have remained fairly calm about it (Rangers’ interest), I know what I have in mind. I did not just want to leave Vitesse in the winter. I do not see the winter as the ideal time to make a transfer. Of course, if a good opportunity comes along you can not let it go. But we play European, are still in the cup tournament and are doing well in the league. I knew I wanted to finish the season here. I prefer to participate in the preparation with a new team. Maybe I will go to another country, those are big changes. You have less time in winter than in summer.”

Doekhi appears to be confirming here that Rangers did not make an offer during the winter window, hence he stayed, but then given Vitesse wouldn’t let the stopper go for less than £2M despite just 6 months left on his deal, it’s not that surprising.

He would appear to be waiting for the summer, hoping also that Rangers are in the CL.

That may have a bearing on his decision.

We watch and wait.

  1. Is there anything to stop us signing him on a pre-contract just now or is that covered by the transfer window? My worry would be that when a £4m rated player becomes available for free in the summer that he will have much better offers than playing for Rangers in the SPFL.
