Twists & turns as Goldson ‘offers’ Rangers a condition for staying

Connor Goldson looks inevitable to leave after GVB admitted he was relaxed about players like him who are on the last throes of their contracts.

But the recent claims that the former Brighton man would be persuaded to stay if Rangers secure Champions League seem a little far-fetched.

The tabloids have been reporting the story that he’s ready to leave in the summer, but will change his mind if Rangers win 56 ergo grab that group stage in the Champions League, which in turn will lead to a bigger budget and the ability for him to get the wage he believes he’s entitled to.

Is there any truth in this?

We don’t actually care any more.

Goldson and his contract saga has become a borderline disgrace, with his being asked repeatedly about the situation and always avoiding sharing the truth with reporters.

True, it’s reporters, and you hardly want to spill your innermost to them, but fans surely have a right to know, as does the manager, and Goldson has been cryptic from as long ago as October 2020 when the negotiations started.

It’s just ended up slightly sour – he’d be leaving not as the winner of 55 and the brilliant defender he was last season, but someone who played mind games with fans and press, left everyone guessing but showed a lack of commitment in not signing, then reportedly ended up in negotiations with Championship clubs.

We have no issue with him leaving to go home to be near family, it’s how he appears to be going about it.

Which, frankly, sounds like someone else we could mention…

  1. It is down to his agent and Rangers board. The facts are as i see it are written plainly as if he went to the championship he will get double his salary and football is a short career and he has came out a few times and said its more to do with taking care of his family and probably recognises that time flys with football as its a very short career and can come to an end fast for various reasons. He worked his ass off and played every single game last season to stop Celtics most important year ever in Scottish football lol.

I would miss him as he is a great defender and no one can blame a man for wanting to secure his family’s future. Most of us here want do the same and have a plan B to think of their own family’s if a job came along offering more money from the current job we are in. It looks like Rangers are unable to offer what he needs due to what he can get if when his contract runs out.

f he does leave i’m sure GVB has someone in mind but time will tell what will happen as like you said we are all left guessing as i believe no one wants him gone. He knows this league he knows the team he know’s what the standards are and he ticked all those boxes last season.

I hope he stays but money talks in football. I for one would be sad to see him go as he is a key player depending on the day but if he does go he goes with my best wishes.

  2. I have no problem with Goldson keeping his cards close to his chest. It’s right that he does what’s best for him and his family. I think we’d miss him if he left as he is our dominant defender. He can be replaced of course but it’s always a risk. As for staying the only way that would happen if he doesn’t get a club that suits his ambitions. I suspect he thought he’d maybe get a decent EPL club. BTW if Goldson was to sign a 4 year deal with Rangers at £30k a week it would be worth around £6m to him so it’s not like he’d be on the breadline.

  3. Certainly he should be leaving. No player should hold Rangers too ransom. Diallo is disappointing tbh I thought with the patterson money and getting shot of bacuna we’d have had a permanent deal of some sorts for someone.

  4. I always say when a player doesn’t want to stay we should sell him ASAP as they often down tools for fear of getting insured and effectively messing up a big money move, I rated Golson as player of the year last season but its time for him to go, and I wish him all the best.
