Rangers could be given big AFCON boost inside 24 hours

Rangers look set to be given a huge boost for January after Zimbabwe’s threatened expulsion from AFCON failed to materialise (yet) and the beleaguered nation will likely take their bow tomorrow after all, sparing Zambia’s Fashion Sakala from a last-minute call.

The situation with Zimbabwe is that their country’s FA have written to AFCON to explain the team sent to compete is in fact government appointed and is NOT the football side chosen by the national association.

As such, there is a slim chance even at this eleventh hour that Zambia COULD get the call if AFCON take the view that the Zimbabwean team violates sporting integrity and is politically-motivated, but as it approaches less than 24 hours till the team takes the field, the chances become slimmer still.

Which is good news for Rangers because Sakala will remain at home and not get the call to go to Cameroon.

Of course the player himself would likely love to go, even if the merits of the call wouldn’t be necessarily the most honourable, but then equally Denmark in 1992 experienced the exact same fate and went onto win the thing!

But as things stand, Rangers will retain Fashion Sakala’s services this month going into next after all.
