No interest in Rangers’ Goldson as contract limbo rumbles on

If one elephant in the room has lingered over Rangers for the past year, it’s the future of Connor Goldson.

The vice-captain, who has never directly addressed the contract chat, is free to talk to new clubs as of almost three weeks ago, but there’s been no solid interest in his services and no word of PL sides taking him south even as a Bosman in the summer.

Which brings us to John Souttar and Niko Katic.

It’s a known fact Giovanni van Bronckhorst is bringing down the age of Rangers’ squad by signing young players and gradually phasing out the older guard, and this includes the potential for Goldson too.

Souttar, on the other hand, like Niko Katic, is considerably younger and both have their whole careers ahead of them – is Gio more interested now in a future of defenders in the form of the likes of Souttar and Katic as opposed to sticking with the older ones currently at Ibrox?

Goldson is no nearer signing a contract, and no nearer leaving, so his situation is in limbo, but summer sees a bit of a potential reboot.

A return for Katic, the arrival of Souttar (unless he pops up in January instead) and hopefully a refreshed Filip Helander who’s not 29 till April could well be the vision the manager has for the rearguard.

He’s already advocated youth strongly, and put a lot of faith in young Calvin Bassey – perhaps that’s the remit?

What we do know is Rangers will continue to evolve, amid the changes our manager is making to good effect.

Keep it up.
