Newcastle are tonight reported to be preparing a £20M bid for Alfredo Morelos, with manager Eddie Howe keen to bolster his attacking options.

The Colombian striker, in strong form since GVB took charge, is said to be happy in Glasgow, but has always, as we know, harboured ambitions of playing in the PL, and if the Geordies did indeed submit a bid of that amount, it’s not impossible that Rangers would accept.

As we discussed in an earlier entry, Rangers players are now worth their market value, at the very least, and a hitman like Morelos with caps for his country and countless UEL experience not to mention impressive stats for club is certainly a coveted prize for a side in the PL’s middle range.

Could Rangers get more than £20M? Would they prefer to hold onto him?

Morelos at his best is by a distance the finest striker in Scotland, and is capable of stepping up to the PL with ease.

GVB is getting infinitely more from him than his former manager did, and it’s alerted sides of the scope and size of Newcastle, which isn’t a surprise at all.

They certainly have money to burn, and they’re looking to build a completely new prospect to assault the PL with from this window onwards, and would consider a striker of the calibre of Morelos an astute addition.

Stewart Robertson, over two years ago, did say the club would only sell Morelos for at least what Celtic sold Dembele for. But of course, the Dembele Dollars have risen and Rangers could expect potentially even more than £20M.

But then what is the striker worth to Rangers? Giovanni is keen on him and selling him isn’t top priority. It would have to be worth it over holding onto him.

If a strong bid arrives, Rangers may have to make a decision.

  1. i think letting any of our key first team go would be a risky move we could get 20m for him but even if u spent 10m of tht on a replacement dosnt mean they will come in and start fireing streight away… i think we should be looking to add to our strikers b4 we sell Alfie

    • You’re absolutely correct. We have no guarantees any replacement will hit the ground running. But given what we know about Morelos there are no guarantees that his current scoring streak will continue or that he won’t take the huff next week and down tools.

  2. This would have to be a gamble to sell at this point in the season, he is by far the best striker in the SPFL and would fit Newcastle very well and the fans would love him down there, he would easily show well in the EPL. We don’t have anyone of that level even lined up to replace him that I am aware, so maybe it’s a non starter.
