We covered the defensive options in an entry recently, but unfortunately the situation has deterioriated remarkably even in a few days.

Connor Goldson is the only fit proper defender Rangers now have, and he is 99% certain to leave in the summer, with a chance of it happening this month as well.

Jack Simpson is to be freed and leave this month, or if he’s lucky, as a loan.

Leon Balogun could miss the entirety of January having pulled out of the AFCON with injury.

Filip Helander is already out till February at the earliest.

Calvin Bassey is, mercifully, available and fit but isn’t a full CB.

Niko Katic is 99% certain to remain in Croatia till the summer at least.

And Leon King is too green to be considered at this stage as a senior defender.

In short, while on the face of it we still have Goldson and Bassey, which has done rather well under Gio, it’s slightly a pickle because there’s literally no one else available.

January work has become absolutely vital, and we feel like we’re like a broken record on this one because we covered it so recently, but Balogun’s injury issues have become a major concern and we have no depth if Bassey or Goldson pick up a knock.

Gio needs options, he really does.
