Aribo STARTS as Nigeria’s AFCON gets underway
GLASGOW, SCOTLAND - MARCH 21: Rangers player Joe Aribo looks on during the warm up before the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Celtic and Rangers at Celtic Park on March 21, 2021 in Glasgow, Scotland. Rangers’ Joe Aribo has been confirmed in the Super Eagles’ XI as Nigeria open their ACFON campaign up against the mighty Egypt featuring on-fire Mo Salah.

Rangers’ man takes his maiden bow for his country at a major championships for the first time, and given he only gained his first cap in late 2019 it’s a meteoric rise to prominence since then for the playmaker, widely-regarded as Rangers’ most in-form and effective player at present.

Indeed, he has only 12 caps for Nigeria, but is considered an integral part of their full-strength side, and will surely lighten Cameroon up with his qualities.

We did cheekily suggest yesterday that former Ger Umar Sadiq could feature in there too, for a little spot of irony, but the current Almeria star finds himself on the bench.

Leicester’s Kelechi Iheanacho, who Rangers were once linked to long ago, starts as Nigeria’s main threat up front, and a combo of him and Aribo could be darn deadly.

But as we hinted yesterday, Salah’s high profile means he is likely to be the main focus of this one, which gives Aribo some breathing room to just play his football.

Good luck Joe.
