£16M for Nathan Patterson, did Rangers get it right?

We remember in the early days of ex-manager Steven Gerrard’s exit, every time we mentioned his name or made a comment, the replies, 95% of the time, were ‘he’s gone, get over it, move on ffs’.

Literally exactly those words. These days many to even most fans we notice have forgotten him or downright detest him and are keen to tell us how much.

We highly doubt discussing Nathan Patterson will attract the same ire because it’s a big topic, and a big sale.

We’ve not really covered the exit of our promising young RB, discussing only that it was as good as done, but it is final now, he’s an Everton player and we’re £12M rising to £16M richer for it.

What can we take from it and what are our conclusions?

One of the most extraordinarily apposite observations was made by Ibrox Noise regular Robrob57 and it summed the whole situation up quite well.

In a piece where we’d discussed how (now) former team mate Gedion Zelalem had given new signing from NYC James Sands a good word or two about the Famous, we also pointed out the former Ger had once been hyped as the next Xavi or Iniesta, but now at 24, being at Rangers when 18 in the Championship was the highest point of his career.

Our point?

Patterson at 20 was a risk. He could go on to be Trent Alexander-Arnold indeed, and rip up the PL like Andrew Robertson did on the other side.

But he could be a Zelalem – with incredible promise and hype but fails to deliver.

When offered £16M Rangers had a decision to make. Take the risk on keeping him and him not working out, or sell him now and effectively wipe out 99% of our financial problems.

It was, in every sense, a no-brainer.

Auchenhowie was made for profiteering purposes, with senior team breakthroughs only a bonus.

Patterson is the first major success of the Academy and it’s put Rangers on a much stronger footing.

So, like Rob, we do completely favour the sale. We think the club got it bang on.

He could well tear it to pieces in the PL and become a £30M+ RB. True.

But in the here and now, Rangers made the right call on selling a player who wasn’t even a first-team regular.

If he turns into Gedion Zelalem (sorry Geds) the decision will be even more vindicated.

  1. I am definitely in the same camp as Robrob57 , it was good business for the Famous. We needed to put serious non debt cash into the club ASAP. And so it is . Patterson will flourish in the PL and we will all follow and be proud of his progress. He’s one of us for ever .
