Everton, as expected, are to return for Nathan Patterson next month, after an £8M bid was rejected last summer.

The Toffees, who have just shelled out £20M on a LB, are keen to bolster RB with a quality talent, and Patterson is said to be top of Rafa Benitez’ shopping list.

Rangers value Patterson at at least £15M, given his potential, and following the ex-manager’s confirmation that £8M was ‘miles off’ we can certainly expect the Goodison Park side to double that amount if they’re to have any chance of landing him.

Patterson himself is now reported to be keen on the move. He would rather stay at Ibrox, but the 20-year old knows as long as James Tavernier is at Ibrox, he will always play second fiddle.

The captain has been a solid performer to say the least since new manager Gio van Bronckhorst joined, and there’s little justification for dropping him at present.

But it’s only frustrating Patterson who sees no real pathway now to the first team aside fleeting appearances here and there.

Rangers fans fumed at Steven Gerrard for not playing Patterson, for not dropping Tavernier, but the tone of this ire has mellowed a lot since GVB’s arrival, and while many still would prefer Patterson, the results and the captain’s displays since the Dutchman became manager rather undermine a strong case for Tavernier’s dropping.

Long term of course Patterson would succeed Tav, but he appears unwilling to wait. And we can’t really blame him in truth.

As such, it does seem like if a good bid comes in, Rangers will accept it.

Because it also seems there’s only room for one of these players in the starting XI.

  1. Ironically if Patterson went to Everton he would find himself playing second fiddle to Everton captain Coleman. So kind of out of the frying pan into the frying pan.

  2. Although it would be sad to lose Nathan, since Tav should still be good for some years yet, and GVB needs the funding for bringing in new faces, we should accept this may well be a win win outcome.
