Goal of the (half) season – we count down Rangers’ top 5
GLASGOW, SCOTLAND - APRIL 25: James Tavernier of Rangers celebrates after scoring the open goal during the William Hill Scottish Cup match between Rangers and St Johnstone at Ibrox Stadium on April 25, 2021 in Glasgow, Scotland. With Christmas fast approaching and Rangers not back in action until Boxing Day, now is the time to sit down and decide the top 5 goals of the season so far. For the record, these will be based on generally great team-made goals, or individual brilliance in the form of cunning skill or a thunderous long range strike. These will not base on sentimentality and how much the goal meant to us as fans, meaning Filip Helander’s towering header, beautiful as it was, will not feature on the list. Before revealing the number 1 goal, there will also be three honourable mentions for the list, seeing as we have been treated to so many impressive goals so far this season. However, these honourable mentions will be in no particular order, you can make up your own mind on them.

5th – James Tavernier v Motherwell (Motherwell 1-6 Rangers)

The fact that this stunning strike sits at number 5 reflects the crackers that are amongst this list. Starting us off is the captain’s fantastic goal to equalise away to Motherwell. Following a delightful delivery from Calvin Bassey, Tavernier let fly and sunk an absolutely sumptuous volleyed strike into the bottom left corner. The goal was an absolute peach from the skipper, and an important one which got Rangers back on terms in a game where they pushed onto win 1-6.

4th – John Lundstram v Hearts (Rangers 1-1 Hearts)

Next up is John Lundstram, and while the match as a whole was one that ‘Gers fans would rather forget about, this stunning finish from the midfielder simply must be spoken about. Following a Hearts clearance out the box, the ball came to Lundstram from distance, who side-footed a venomous strike towards goal. The Hearts ‘keeper managed to get a hand to the shot, but it was simply too well struck by the Englishman, and the touch of the goalkeeper only helped it further into the top corner. This earned Lundstram number 4 on the list, despite the poor outcome of the match in question.

3rd – Joe Aribo v Livingston (Livingston 1-3 Rangers)

Little secret here. This goal was originally destined for the number 5 spot, but upon watching it back continuously, it can be difficult to even realise just how magnificent a goal this is. With good build up play from Kent and Morelos on the left hand side to allow the ball to reach Aribo, the positioning of the Nigerian midfielder required something special in order to convert the chance. However, when you need something special, Joe Aribo this season is often the man to turn to. Aribo, from just inside the box, curled an absolutely stunning finish into the top right corner, evading everyone and kissing the underside of the crossbar as it went in. An incredible finish in Giovanni’s domestic debut, this strike earns number 3 and was unfortunate to not be even higher.

2nd – Ryan Kent v Ross County (Rangers 4-2 Ross County)

Next up on the list comes from Ryan Kent and this was a goal worth remembering. With the score at one apiece, the ball was fed out to Ryan Kent out on the left, who swiftly cut inside and evaded his marker, and unleashed an absolutely terrific effort from a great distance to put Rangers 2-1 up. With Kent having been out with an injury, the goal perfectly marked the return of our number 14, and his goal is more than worthy of taking the 2nd place spot.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

Juninho Bacuna vs Ross County (Rangers 4-2 Ross County)

Coming from the same game as Ryan Kent’s unbelievable strike which made number 2 on the list, Bacuna marked the game with a very well taken goal. With Bacuna being something of a cameo player this season, this was absolutely his biggest moment in a Rangers shirt so far. Doing well to link up with Joe Aribo, to then cut inside and strike a very impressive finish into the top left corner from the edge of the box, Bacuna is unfortunate not to make the top 5 with what was a very good goal.

Joe Aribo vs Hearts (Hearts 0-2 Rangers)

Honestly, Aribo could have filled this entire list with the goals he has put away for Rangers this season. This goal was certainly worth noting as an honourable mention, as our number 17 worked his magic for GVB at Tynecastle. Following a perfect over the top delivery from Connor Goldson, the Nigerian midfielder took the ball down and fired in an extremely composed finish past the oncoming Hearts goalkeeper. A massive goal in a massive game, Joe Aribo has certainly played his part in goals this season and earns himself an honourable mention.

Glen Kamara vs Motherwell (Motherwell 1-6 Rangers)

Any regular viewer of Rangers will know that Kamara, despite being a staple part of the starting XI, is not one for shooting all too often. The Finnish playmaker will often opt for a pass to one of his teammates, however as Rangers were cruising at 1-3 away to Motherwell, following on from the 5th placed Tavernier volley which levelled the scoring, Kamara finally chose to back his shooting ability. Following a short corner routine from Rangers, which allowed the ball out to Kamara, the midfielder blasted a terrific shot into the bottom left corner from distance. The goal was so well taken, and had it not been such a solid list of contenders, Kamara certainly could have found himself amongst the top 5 with his strike.

1st – James Tavernier vs St. Johnstone (St. Johnstone 1-2 Rangers)

What a goal. Late in the game as Rangers were creeping towards a disappointing 1-1 draw away to St. Johnstone, the captain tops the list with his absolutely wonderful goal. With Kent feeding the ball out to the skipper on the right of the pitch, Tavernier rolled back the years to his goal scoring sprees in the Scottish Championship with an incredible finish. Taking one touch to control the ball and then another to curl a stunning shot all the way into the top left corner, the captain deservedly takes the number 1 spot with his screamer, one which was also a very important goal late in the game too as mentioned.
