GVB has confirmed Rangers’ XI tomorrow will be a fringe select v Lyon, in a move which might disappoint some Rangers fans who expected a full strength team and ‘must win’.

Yes indeed, we noticed a bit of chat online hinting at the need to win and play our best side, but as we alluded to some entries ago, the only thing resting on that really is the £300,000 for a group win and Gio’s winning start.

Beyond that, beyond the really important stuff, there’s nothing riding on this. Both sides are through to the next stage so perhaps unnecessary risks will be avoided.

John Lundstram, Nathan Patterson, Stephen Kelly, Juninho Bacuna, and Scott Wright are among those expected to feature in this one, and while we doubt the fringe side will have enough to overcome the French giants, a positive result in this one would continue the excellent honeymoon period Giovanni is enjoying.

Of course, a defeat wouldn’t end it per se, but it would be a continued boost for the club to see yet another stunning away performance against Lyon.

Naturally, we all remember 2007 and that incredulous 3-0 win for Walter’s unfancied Rangers, when we went to the Gerland and took on mighty Lyon, completely annihilating them on the night. It was, literally, one of the great European results in our history. Back then they were not too far from what PSG are now.

So we’ll see what the fringe players produce on their big night in france.
