The reports claiming Giovanni van Bronckhorst has contacted super agent Mino Raiola about the possibility of securing Xavi Simons are hard to fathom in truth.
This kid is under the guidance of an agent legendary for getting the best gigs and deals for his clients, and given Simons is currently on a wage of around £20,000 in Paris and seeks a move away as a free agent, it’s hard to believe that Rangers will have the budget to tempt to the agent or the player into life in Govan.
Especially given some of Europe’s major clubs with far greater financial muscle are after Simons as well.
Rangers, in fairness, have a few advantages over the competition.
Obviously, one is our manager. Widely respected throughout Europe, his start at Ibrox has not gone unnoticed, and naturally he’s Dutch, which is a big lure for Simons.
Secondly, Rangers can likely offer Simons titles, medals, and most tempting of all, Champions League next season in event of the title.
These are valuable for a young player making his name.
But at the end of the day, he will want a big club, in a big league, in the CL, who have a budget greater than what Rangers can offer.
If Gio can pull this one off, it will destroy any signing Rangers have made for years.
We’ll… see?
