Breaking unwanted records – what now for Rangers’ Cedric Itten?

We must say Cedric Itten’s career has gone completely downhill since leaving St Gallen.

After a sparkling 19 goals in 34 outings for the Swiss side, he came to Ibrox on a big £2.5M move and promptly found himself the record-breaking sub with a ridiculous 28 appearances from the bench last season. Total of 40 appearances for the Famous, 6 goals, 3 assists.

He got a loan move to SpVgg Greuther Fürth and it was meant to kick-start his career, but has had the opposite effect by gaining Europe-wide attention as the literal worst top-flight team in any significant European league.

A simply horrific one win all season (17 played) and they’ve broken records as the literal worst Bundesliga team of all time, and for Itten’s part?

7 starts, 5 subbings on – 2 goals.

We never quite understood this signing.

Itten seems such a decent bloke, who tries his best, but going to a level above Switzerland seems to have undone him entirely.

He wasn’t horrible for Rangers, he just didn’t ever really cut it. Not enough for the ex-boss to really want to use him as anything other than a sub.

Apart from a few admittedly great goals, Itten seems to lack the x factor.

He’s tall, but a hopeless target man. He’s quite strong, but can’t hold the ball up. He’s got average pace, and he’s not technically impressive.

What now for him, once Fürth get relegated? Back to Ibrox and loaned out again?

There are few fans who would surely want him as our striker over Morelos or Sakala, and we can’t really see him having a future as anything aside a squad player.

It seems Itten’s destiny is not with Rangers, but hey, maybe Gio will want to give him a chance.

  1. Bad choice of club for Itten. How can you expect to shine as a striker when you are getting thumped every week and barely muster a scoring opportunity. I’m sure there will be a right club for him somewhere and wish him well.
