The press have been trying to wind Rangers fans up by claiming Jurgen Klopp has ‘called’ Rangers a new club.

The Liverpool boss faces Rangers’ former manager Steven Gerrard today as Aston Villa travel to Anfield, and of course the current Kop manager was asked about that in depth.

The anti-Rangers press have made a big deal out of the fact he used air quote symbols when he mentioned Rangers, hinting the old ‘sevco’ nonsense.

But this overlooks two facts.

Firstly, he’d already mentioned us by name in the conference without any such gestures at all, which rather pours cold water on any hint of disrespect he’s said to be showing us.

Secondly, he only used one hand, and not two. If you’re using air quotes, you have to use both hands, and even then it was barely a gesture at all.

It looked far more like an emphasis or prefix and it was borderline subconscious as well, as most gestures are.

But the fact he only used that gesture once suggests he wasn’t using it for the reason the timmy press wants you to think.

If nothing else, he’d be smearing SG himself.

  1. Laughing out loud! I’m pretty certain the press got it (deliberately) wrong. What’s more, they chose the wrong person for it. Klopp would probably burst out laughing himself at what these people have read into it. Klopp is not that kind of person. He enjoys a bit of verbal jousting with journalists, opposition managers and referees, but he’s not one who would (deliberately) insult, demean or disrespect anyone. I bet he isn’t even aware of that nonsense he allegedly referred to. What he seems to have indicated with his gesture is the somewhat similar style of play Gerrard promoted at Rangers and now promotes at Villa, despite the difference between the two teams’ players, etc.
