It’s maybe not that massive a call, but we think it’s time, truly, to phase Allan McGregor out of the side and start to bring Robby McCrorie in more and more.

Forget Jon McLaughlin, sorry, he’s average and nothing more than a number two. He’s not good enough for Rangers as a first choice.

But McCrorie is the future. And McGregor is clearly not in the form he used to be capable of.

He’s barely made any of his typical stunning saves this season, one or two and that’s been about it. And we’re not attacking him for that – he threw everything into 55 and now he’s jaded. He’s also nearly 40.

Even Gigi Buffon started losing his place at 40.

McCrorie though has everything to gain, learn and develop, and who better than McGregor to coach him, guide him, and make him the best he can be.

McGregor could easily retire as a player coach, called upon in an injury crisis or for easing McCrorie into it, and given McGregor broke through at about the same age, he know exactly where McCrorie is right now. He’s been there. Identically.

It’s the youngster’s time to have a real go, and we’d love to see more of him now that McGregor is starting to fade.

All in favour?

  1. Yeah, I’ve been shot down for saying this in some places usually on the back of a Greegsy wonder-stop. These saves aren’t to be sneezed at and the guy is a legend several times over but he is going off his game now. We surely all appreciate that and I happily ate my humble pie when I had doubts about bringing him back for a new era, he has more than shown what an astute decision it was. McLaughlin, no offence meant to these clubs is a Hibs, Aberdeen or Motherwell level keeper. McCrorie is or should be our future no.1. He didn’t bat an eyelid when he was thrown in against Celtic and we can’t wait until he gets bored and leaves like many others before him.
