What is evident is Rangers’ squad, while far from poor, needs a bit of spring-cleaning. A glut of the players’ hearts appear to be elsewhere, and new manager GVB will clearly going to put his own stamp on what he sees out there.

But in order to do that, to bring in some quality in January, it’s clear that Rangers DO have to sell.

Ross Wilson, publicly at least, has told us Gio is under no pressure to sell, and it’s not a requirement, but it’s simple economics.

Rangers have a deficit of £19M and you can’t just buy new players if you’re technically at a loss of nearly £20M, so it’s clear if we want to spend any major cash, we have to sell first.

Ibrox Noise takes you through the key names likely to be the most prominent for selling in January, should it come to that, and it probably will:

Glen Kamara:

Our sources tell us he wants to leave, and the ex-boss rates him very highly. Most Rangers fans would be ok with selling the Fin as long as it’s for a plump sum. He did sign a new deal to ensure Rangers got a good chunk of change, and the release clause is £15M. If the ex-boss wants the lad, he knows what he has to do.

Ryan Kent:

He’s happy at Ibrox, but his situation could be better. Partner now based in England, so he’d probably be happy with a move to be near her. The benefit of the PL also not going over his head. His ex-boss is a huge fan and the release clause in his contract is said to be £20M. Rangers would be very content with that.

Borna Barisic:

Another one who is said to be wanting an exit, his heart has been elsewhere for some time and he just needs a fresh break now. Been said his ex-manager wants him at Villa for £8M, and for a player in the poor form he is and having lost his place with his NT that’s now a reasonable number in truth.

Alfredo Morelos:

His ex-manager wants him, and knows he’ll get a different player to the one going through the motions right now. Value? It’s not the £20M fans delusionally think, Morelos’ form doesn’t vindicate that number. If we get £10M we’d be thrilled. We’re not in the position Celtic are, where their finances mean they can spend millions without needing to sell. It’s not like Edouard, unfortunately.

Honourable mentions:

Joe Aribo:

Been a bit of talk about Joe, and that he’ll be a target. We’re not so sure. Some sides have looked at him, yes, and Galatasaray did come close, but their bid was only £6M so that wasn’t happening. He’s nowhere near a £20M star yet, he’s just a very very good player and that’s all we can say. Only thin reports his ex-manager wants him.

Nathan Patterson:

Clubs will be back for Nathan but we’re hoping he’s going to become a mainstay in this team now. This kid has the potential to be a £20M+ RB but he needs an extended run. We just hope a big fat bid does not arrive, especially with Madrid, Bayern, Utd and Everton among four to be interested.

Connor Goldson:

We’re only mentioning him because while he’s a cert to leave either in January or the summer, if it’s the former it’ll not be for an awful lot. So we can’t count on him as a filthy source of lucre.

The prime candidates of these to be sold are Kent, Kamara and Barisic. And there’s a few quid in there for sure.

Good money for the manager to reinvest in the squad.

  1. I think that’s a fair summary. I think at least 3 will go if the moneys right, Aye sensible money. Barasic , Kent, Kamara. I’m sure GVB and Makaay will already have an idea who they can bring in. We need some pace if Kent goes. Remember this about winning the league . Anything else a bonus to gel the squad. Onwards 56
